About Fiber & Plaster series
Recently a plumber opened a wall of my 1956 studio to fix a broken pipe. The lath and plaster that had been hidden inside the wall was exposed for the first time in 60 years - and I was surprised at how beautiful it was! The cement globules that had been formed by plaster being forced through the negative spaces of the metal lath so long ago had formed an intricate plane of patterns and texture. I was in awe of its unintended beauty and was inspired to create art using a similar technique.
For several months I experimented with different materials before deciding my "lath" would be made of jute. The first plasters I used were heavy and brittle, but by experimenting with combining different materials, I finally developed a lighter and more flexible plaster. I am also experimenting with using paper pulp in place of plaster for an even lighter-weight alternative.
I create the art by forcing plaster (or pulp) through woven jute. It is left to dry for several days before embellishing it with acrylic washes and glazes. The result is a highly textured, loosely woven web of soft jute surrounded by hard, colorful negative spaces.

Specifications
Art is either wrapped over hardboard panels (artwork continues onto the sides) or is free-hanging without a panel. Finished depth depends on the thickness of the jute and is usually between 1.75" - 2" for panel-backed art, and 1/2" for free-hanging art. All art is wired and ready to hang.
